When Karen Rodas and Paul Rybkin’s son, Nathaniel, was born, he lived for only 36 hours.
He was diagnosed with a rare condition called Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), which causes cysts to develop in the kidneys, often leading to kidney failure.
In 2013, the New Jersey couple welcomed another child, Maddy, who was also diagnosed with the same condition as their first son. After a two-year battle with the disease, Maddy found hope—thanks to her father.
Maddy’s condition caused her stomach to swell, and for the first 18 months of her life, she was in and out of the hospital.
Despite frequent hospital visits, tubes, and oxygen treatments, Maddy was managing, until her health began to decline.
According to The Mirror, Maddy became completely exhausted, sleeping up to 18 hours a day and constantly vomiting.
Doctors feared she might not survive unless a suitable kidney donor was found.
Paul, her father, was found to be a match and was able to provide Maddy with the life-saving kidney transplant she desperately needed.
Sadly, her older brother had succumbed to the same condition.
Karen shared her feelings with The Mirror: “With Paul and Maddy, two of my most precious souls, going under the knife, my nerves were a wreck.”
The surgery was a success, and both father and daughter are thriving.
“Daddy’s kidney has saved our little girl,” Karen said. “Now, she has boundless energy. Her massive tummy now just looks a little bit rounded and she is a happy and healthy two-year-old.”
Paul, ever modest, remarked that he would have done what any parent would.
“We have been on a rollercoaster – but any father would have done what I did, donating my kidney to Maddy. It’s part of being a parent,” he told The Mirror.
Maddy will need another kidney transplant in 25 years, but for her parents, that feels like a “lifetime away.”
